Food: Myeongdong Gyoja (+bonus!)

Myeongdong Gyoja is one of the more famous restaurants in Myeongdong. It was founded in 1964, and has a total of 2 outlets – of which both are in Myeongdong. I visited the main branch together with 4 other friends, and we left very satisfied (:

Directions:

Take the subway to Myeongdong Station (Line 4), and leave via Exit 6. Once you are out at Exit 6, take a left turn and you will see a huge Nature Republic to your left.

After walking along Nature Republic, take a right turn, and walk along that path.

After you pass these shops, you will see the newly built MCM building at the end of this lane. From there, take a left turn.MDGZ.003Walk inside this alley (in between MCM & Milky Bee) and soon you will see this shop:

MDGZ.005Myeongdong Gyoja 명동교자 (which is beside H&M)

MDGZ.006This shop is very famous amongst both locals and tourists so be prepared to queue! The 5 of us waited for approximately 20 minutes before we got a table. The wait should be a lot shorter if there are lesser people in your group!

The menu is rather straightforward, and these are what we ordered:

MDGZ.007Kalguksu 갈국수 (knife-sliced noodles)

This dish is quite similar to Singapore’s ban mian, and the noodles are soft and chewy (my favourite!). I believe 갈국수 is considered as one of the staples to the Koreans, and I personally love this dish because it has a “homely” taste to it. (Or as I always like to tell Wenshi, 有家的感觉 hehe) This dish is about 8,000 krw at this place. Even though it seems pricey, I think 2 people can share one bowl, as the shop owners will give you rice (for free) if you ask for it.

MDGZ.008Myeongdong Gyoja 교자, or Mandu 만두 as they call it

It’s pretty similar to Xiaolongbao, except that it has more meat and a little less soup. This costs 8,000 krw for 10 dumplings, and is a perfect dish for sharing. All of us left the shop feeling very full and satisfied yums 🙂

Address: 25-2 Myeongdong 2(i)-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea ‎

Telephone Number: (02)776-5348 / (02)776-3424

Opening Hours: 10.30am-9.30pm

Bonus: Milky Bee Ice Cream

This is a new find, as the shop wasn’t around during my exchange program last February – July / holiday last December. I’m not exactly sure when this shop opened, but we only passed by this place yesterday!

MBIC.003

This honeycomb ice cream IS DA BOMB. If you’re a fan of milk, I guarantee you will LOVE this. The ice cream is very milky with streaks of honey over the ice cream. There’s also a cube of honey on top (as seen in the photo), with goes superbly well with the ice cream. Really a huge bonus after our lunch!

Love, J ❤
